Yoga Basics

Yoga Den began offering this class in 2006. As more and more referrals from Doctors and Physical therapists were coming in, we realized that some of these students needed specific modifications for safe practice. We were both surprised and pleased to see how many of our existing students signed up for the course, simply to fine tune their alignment, and to get a better understanding of the benefits of the postures.

This class is held in workshop format, with hands on opportunity for Q's
and A's and is offered in several formats to suit demanding schedules. First, as a four week course that runs in sessions, where postures are learned each week, with the final class practicing a Mind Body flow. These sessions begins the first Tuesday of each month, from 11-12am,
and the first Thursday of each month from 7:45pm-8:45. Yoga Basics is also offered on occasional Saturdays as a 3 hour workshop, and in private format which can be scheduled at your convenience.

Handouts are given to students so they can practice at home.

The cost for the session is $50.

Mind~Body and Restorative Slow Flow

Our Mind Body classes are what many consider "Hatha" yoga; the focus is on safe alignment, breath awareness, deep stretching and stress relief. The studios are warmed enough to offer a safe and comfortable stretch. Practicing yoga in a cold room can prevent muscles from becoming elastic. Students are therefore prone to injury much easier than if they were stretching at a slightly elevated temperature (hi 70's to lo 80's).

This is perfect for those who are new to yoga, for athletes looking for restoration and muscular balance, people suffering from chronic pain, and/or anyone looking for an all-level practice to keep the body strong, balanced and pliable.

For those of you who think, "I'm not flexible. I could never do yoga." or "My back gives me trouble", "I'm so weak". Trust Us! This is exactly what you need. In just a few classes, you will start to notice a difference.

Sun Power

Our Sun Power Yoga classes are an eclectic blend of Power Vinyasa, Bikram (we like it hot), Ashtanga, Jivamukti and Discovery (Kripalu) Yoga. If you are looking for an athletic yogic challenge, you will certainly find it here. With temperatures in the low to mid 90's, this practice will promote detoxification through perspiration, while building strength and stamina. Burning anywhere from 500 to 700 calories per hour, with an on-going practice you will lower body fat, increase muscle mass, sculpt the entire body and gain flexibility. Because everyone has different strengths and limitations, modifications are always offered to make the posture suitable for all body types.

REMEMBER, this class is designed to provide a challenge for all levels, including those students who have been practicing for several years. That being said, new students should not expect to be able to come in and do the entire class. If you do , Great! If you need to rest here and there, Great! Yoga teaches us to celebrate where we are at any given moment, not to self-judge, and to simply enjoy the ride!

It's all good!

What you need:

  • Large towel/practice rug
  • Practice mat
  • Hand towel ( high sweat factor!)
  • Plenty of Water

Sun Power Yogalates

This "high heat/high energy" class is a contemporary blend of SUN (heat) Power (energy) Yoga and Pilates-inspired exercises. For yoga lovers, you will enjoy warming your body with SUN Salutations and Vinyasa, followed by an intense standing series designed to stretch, strengthen, detoxify and heighten self-focus.

Once the body is good and warm, using the exercise ball*, students define calves, quads and gluteus muscles with a vigorous series of wall squats.

After leaving the wall, you will almost welcome the core work that lies ahead. If the 200 crunches that begin the core series don't warm you up the exercises that follow most certainly will. This class will satisfy the fitness junkie, the yogi/yogini with a desire to cross-train, the Pilates buff with a unique spin, or anyone on a personal transformation journey looking for quick results.

REMEMBER, this class is designed to provide a challenge for all levels, including those students who have been practicing for several years. That being said, new students should not expect to be able to come in and do the entire class. If you do , Great! If you need to rest here and there, Great! As we coordinate breath and movement, and flow through sequences designed to stimulate both the physical and energy bodies, we begin to understand and appreciate the true meaning and benefit of Vinyasa yoga! This class delivers a high sweat factor, bring your towel and come well hydrated, you will leave feeling cleansed and completely at ease.

Restorative Slow Flow

A basic class with longer holds and grounding postures, this is a great place for new practitioners or athletes who want to slow down. This class will concentrate on foundational postures and incorporate restorative stretching to release any unnecessary stress. While cultivating strength and flexibility, the use of props may be used to enhance poses in this practice. Restorative slow flow is available to students of all levels and abilities.

Yin Yoga

A special practice with a meditative focus, designed to improve flexibility, energy flow and range of motion by targeting the connective tissues of the body in a very controlled practice. Yin Yoga is a style of yoga which is a blend of Indian Hatha yoga [1] and several disciplines from the Chinese Taoist [2] tradition of yoga. Yin Yoga is the perfect complement to any dynamic yoga practice and also benefits athletes of all types in terms of injury prevention. Yin Yoga focuses on the connective tissue, specifically the ligaments [3] and tendons [4] in the joints and spine as well as fascia throughout the target zone of each posture. Over time, the practice of Yin Yoga can lengthen these tissues, increasing range of motion [5]. To give an idea of the role that connective tissue plays in determining range of motion: muscles and connective tissue each account for about 40% percent of the body's range of motion. It is also believed that the energy channels / meridians exist within the connective tissues and are therefore engaged and enlivened, and the flow of prana or chi is improved in a yin practice. Therefore, Yin yoga is said to be like acupuncture for the whole body. Open to all levels, no prior experience necessary.
